하원 증언 앞서 제출한 자료에서 밝혀
인플레는 기저효과·공급제한·리오프닝 수요 때문
"고용시장 나아지려면 갈 길 멀어"
[이데일리 권소현 기자] 제롬 파월 미국 연방준비제도(연준·Fed) 의장이 올들어 급격한 물가상승룰은 점차 완화될 것이라고 밝혔다.
파월 의장은 14일(현지시간) 미 하원 금융위원회 증언에 앞서 제출한 자료에서 “인플레이션이 눈에 띄게 높아졌고 앞으로 몇달 동안은 계속 상승할 것 같다”면서도 “인플레이션이 특히 높아진 것은 일시적인 요인 때문”이라고 설명했다.
앞서 13일 발표된 미국 6월 소비자물가(CPI)는 전월대비 0.9%, 전년동월대비 5.4% 올랐다. 전년대비로는 13년만에 최대 상승률이며 시장 예상치도 크게 웃돈 수준이다.
파월 의장은 이처럼 물가가 뛴 이유로 세가지 요인을 들었다. 작년 물가상승률이 낮았던 데에 따른 기저효과가 작용했다는 점, 코로나19 팬데믹 이후 생산 병목현상이나 공급 제약이 급격한 가격인상으로 이어졌다는 점, 경제활동이 다시 재개되면서 서비스 수요가 급증했다는 점이다.
그는 이어 “현재의 통화완화정책을 바꾸기 위해서는 경제가 더 좋아져야 한다”며 “고용시장은 코로나19가 강타하기 전 수준을 훨씬 밑돌고 있다”고 설명했다. 또 “완전고용을 위한 실질적인 진전과 물가안정까지는 아직 갈 길이 멀다”고 덧붙였다.
